Prof. George was the founding director of the Center for Electronic Imaging Systems, funded in part by the National Science Foundation under the S/IUCRC program, and also of the highly rated ARO-URI Center for Opto-Electronic Systems Research. Prior to this, he was director of The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester for more than four years. Previously he was a professor of applied physics and electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He received the B.S. degree with highest honors from the University of California at Berkeley, the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics from the California Institute of Technology.
Dr. Alexis C. Livanos was Chief Technology Officer and Corporate Vice President of Northrop Grumman Corp. and also served as its Member of Corporate Policy Council. Dr. Livanos served as the Vice President of Boeing Satellite Systems, Inc. He served as Vice President, Navigation Systems Division and General Manager, Navigation Systems Division of Northrop Grumman Corp. He also served as President for Northrop Grumman Space Technology from February 2005 to January 2009. He holds more than 30 years of experience in the fields of advanced communication systems, technology and technology insertions, hardware design and manufacturing and satellite production. Prior to joining Boeing Satellite Systems Inc., in October 2000, Dr. Livanos served as an Executive Vice President, Operations of Loral Space and Communications and was responsible for engineering, manufacturing and programs. Before that, he spent 16 years in various, increasingly key positions at TRW, Inc., in both line and program management capacities. His last position was Program Manager for the Guardrail Program, which is a remotely controlled aircraft and sensor system for wideband signal acquisition, detection and analysis. Prior to this, he served as Deputy General Manager for the Electronics Systems and Technology Division, which provided electronic components, commercial RF devices for cellular applications, subsystems and payloads for internal and external customers. Dr. Livanos serves as Member of Corporate Policy Council of Northrop Grumman Corp. He serves as a Member of the Defense Science Board at United States Department Of Defense. He served as a Director of Space Foundation until January 21, 2011. He has applied for three patents and published 18 technical papers in refereed journals. He is a member of the IEEE and serves on the Engineering Board of Directors for the University of Southern California. He serves as Director of California Institute of Technology and Space Foundation. Dr. Livanos earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, a master’s degree in engineering science, and a Ph.D. in engineering science and physics from the California Institute of Technology, where he subsequently taught applied physics for two years as a post-doctorate fellow.
